Yoga or Pilates: which class is right for you?

Yoga and Pilates are different classes with different aims. The right one is the class whose level, length and teacher match what you want to practise and the week you have.

What usually differs

Yoga classes often combine postures, breathing and a particular tradition. The pace varies a lot between a gentle class and a stronger one. Pilates usually focuses on controlled strength, posture and precise movement, often with a mat or small equipment.

Neither is a treatment for an injury. If something hurts or you are returning after a clinical problem, ask the teacher whether the class is suitable or speak to a physiotherapist first.

Choose the class, not the category

Read the level, the length and what to bring. A beginners’ mat class is a different hour from an intermediate reformer session. The teacher’s name and a short description of who the class is for matter more than a studio brand.

  • Beginner, mixed or intermediate
  • Mat, reformer or equipment
  • How long it is and what you need to bring
  • Whether you can tell the teacher about injuries before you start

Try one of each if you are unsure

One class of each, at a level marked for beginners, tells you more than reading labels. Book the one you can get to on a normal week. On WellNear, compare yoga and Pilates classes by place, teacher and published times.
