How to choose a facial without overcomplicating skincare

A facial is a treatment with a start and an end. Choose it from the result, the products and any patch test — not from a long menu of steps you will not keep at home.

A facial treatment in a calm beauty room

Keep the choice simple

Most people want one of a few things: a straightforward cleanse and massage, help with congestion, or a calmer treatment when skin feels reactive. Read which of those the facial is for. If the description is only product names, ask what you will look and feel like afterwards.

You can book a facial without changing the rest of your skincare. A therapist may suggest products. You can say you want the treatment only.

What to check before you book

Duration, price and whether a patch test or consultation is included should be on the listing. Mention allergies, medical skin treatments and anything that has irritated your skin recently.

  • What the facial is meant to do
  • How long it takes and what it costs
  • Patch test or consultation, if needed
  • Aftercare that affects the next day
  • A named therapist where the salon offers one

Judge it on the visit, not a 12-step plan

A useful facial leaves you knowing what was done and what to avoid that evening. If you liked the therapist, rebook that person. You do not have to adopt a new shelf of products to make the appointment worthwhile.
